Helpful tips for planning a successful portrait session.
1. Selecting the appropriate time of day is essential for achieving high-quality images and presenting oneself favorably. It is widely acknowledged that the Golden Hour is the optimal period for portrait photography due to the quality of light available during this time. The Golden Hour occurs in the evening when the sun is positioned low in the sky and continues after sunset. This particular time frame provides a soft, golden light that enhances the appearance of skin, minimizes squinting, and allows colors to appear more vibrant. I typically start outdoor sessions one and a half hours before sunset and conclude them after sunset, when the light is no longer sufficient for photographs.
2. Wear something you're comfortable with. You've probably read some form of this tip before, but it is the most important thing. If you choose clothes that are too tight or clingy, you'll spend your whole session picking at them or covering up. If you prefer something you've never worn before, you'll be worried about how you look in it or may discover it's uncomfortable, which can come across in your photos. Choose outfits that make you feel like a million dollars! If you purchase something new, wear it some before your session to see how you feel about it. As much as you consider how your outfits make you feel, think about how they'll photograph during your session. If you are going to do multiple outfits please keep it to a maximum of two outfits.
3. Speaking of what you wear, please be sure to steam or iron your outfits before your session. If you show up to iron and steam your outfits during your session, that will be time spent taking away from your picture-taking time.
4. You can bring your accessories, props, and pets to your session. Please bring someone to watch the pets when we shoot you alone. Just give me a heads-up when scheduling or before your sessions on what you plan to bring.
5. What if the weather forecast calls for rain and/or very cold weather on the day of our outside session? I keep a very close look at the weather forecast for all of my upcoming outside sessions. If the forecast calls for a high chance of rain and/or cold weather on the day of our outside session, I'll reach out to you a few days in advance to talk about plan B. Most of the time, plan B involves picking a new date. If the forecast makes it hard for us to make a call to change our plans a few days before, we can make that call the morning of the shoot.
