Engagement portraits are an important part of your wedding story and can be used for newspaper announcements, gift registering, gifts for family and friends, save-the-date and of course wedding invitations. You may even choose to include a few images to be used in your wedding album(s).
WHY THE GOLDEN HOUR?
Choosing the right photographer and the time of day truly makes all the difference in the quality of your images and how you will look. You may have heard that the Golden Hour is the best time of day for portraits and that’s all because of the quality of light during that hour. The Golden Hour is at the end of the day when the sun is low in the sky and will last up to a few minutes after sunset. The Golden Hour is when you want to shoot if you’re looking for that glorious, soft, golden quality of light that will give your skin a softer look, you're not squinting in your photos, and a time of day that the colors will pop.

Helpful tips for planning a successful engagement session.
1. The lighting makes all the difference in the quality of your images when you are doing an outdoor session. You may have heard that there is a specific time of the day that is better for photos outdoors, and that is the Golden Hour time of day! The Golden Hour is the time of day before the sunsets. This is when you want to shoot if you're looking for that glorious, soft, golden light in your photos. The late morning, noontime, and afternoon may seem like a good time for photos, but the light is much harsher at those times of the day because the sun is directly overhead, and eye sockets and shadows will be much darker, which is not flattering at all for faces. If you are doing an indoor session, that type of session can be scheduled at any time of the day.
2. Wear something you're comfortable with. You've probably read some form of this tip before, but it is the most important thing. If you choose clothes that are too tight or clingy, you'll spend your whole session picking at them or covering up. If you prefer something you've never worn before, you'll be worried about how you look in it or may discover it's uncomfortable, which can come across in your photos. Choose outfits that make you feel like a million dollars! If you purchase something new, wear it some before your session to see how you feel about it. As much as you consider how your outfits make you feel, think about how they'll photograph during your session. If you are going to do multiple outfits please keep it to a maximum of two outfits.
3. Speaking of what you wear, please be sure to steam or iron your outfits before your session. If you show up to iron and steam your outfits during your session, that will be time spent taking away from your picture-taking time.
4. Do not wear makeup with SPF during a photo shoot; it will have unflattering results during a photography session if flash equipment is needed.
5. You can bring your accessories, props, and pets to your session. Please bring someone to watch the pets when we shoot you alone. Just give me a heads-up when scheduling or before your sessions on what you plan to bring.
6. What if the weather forecast calls for rain and/or very cold weather on the day of our outside session? I keep a very close look at the weather forecast for all of my upcoming outside sessions. If the forecast calls for a high chance of rain and/or cold weather on the day of our outside session, I'll reach out to you a few days in advance to talk about plan B. Most of the time, plan B involves picking a new date. If the forecast makes it hard for us to make a call to change our plans a few days before, we can make that call the morning of the shoot.
